Mechanism of Action

Entecavir is a nucleoside analog that works by blocking the replication of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is a guanosine nucleoside analogue, which means that it is similar to the natural building blocks of DNA. When entecavir is taken into the body, it is converted into its active form, entecavir triphosphate. This active form then enters the cells that are infected with HBV and binds to the HBV DNA polymerase. The HBV DNA polymerase is an enzyme that is responsible for copying the HBV DNA. When entecavir triphosphate binds to the HBV DNA polymerase, it prevents the enzyme from working properly. This prevents the HBV virus from replicating and spreading to other cells.

Special Precautions

Here are some cautions to keep in mind about entecavir:

  • Entecavir should be taken on an empty stomach, either 2 hours before or 2 hours after a meal.
  • Entecavir should not be taken by people who are allergic to it or who have HIV that is not being treated.
  • Entecavir can interact with other medications, so be sure to tell your doctor about all of the medications you are taking.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor about whether entecavir is right for you.
