Mechanism of Action

Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall. The cell wall is an important part of the structure of bacteria, and without it, the bacteria cannot survive.

Cefixime binds to specific proteins on the bacterial cell wall called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This binding prevents the PBPs from carrying out their normal function, which is to link together the sugar molecules that make up the cell wall. As a result, the cell wall becomes weak and eventually breaks down, causing the bacteria to die.

Cefixime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means that it is effective against a wide range of bacteria. It is particularly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, which are the type of bacteria that are most commonly responsible for infections in humans.
