Uses of Kelfer 500 Capsule 10s

Deferiprone is an oral iron chelator used to treat patients with transfusional iron overload caused by thalassemia syndromes. Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect the production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. People with thalassemia often need regular blood transfusions, which can lead to a buildup of iron in the body.

Side Effects of Kelfer 500 Capsule 10s

The most common side effects of deferiprone are gastrointestinal, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Other common side effects include joint pain, headache, and reddish-brown urine discoloration. Deferiprone can also cause serious side effects, such as agranulocytosis (a severe decrease in white blood cells) and liver damage.

Drug Interactions

Avoid using deferiprone with aluminium-containing antacids as it can chelates trivalent metal ions.

Contraindications

Deferiprone is contraindicated in patients with:

  1. Hypersensitivity to deferiprone or any of the excipients in the formulation
  2. Severe neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count <500/mm³)
  3. Severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh class C)
  4. Concurrent use of other drugs that can cause agranulocytosis

Mechanism of Action

Deferiprone is a bidentate chelator, which means that it can bind to two iron atoms at the same time. This forms a complex that is excreted in the urine. Deferiprone is more effective at chelating iron from tissue cells than from red blood cells.

Special Precautions

Deferiprone should be used with caution in patients with:

  1. Mild to moderate neutropenia
  2. Mild to moderate liver impairment
  3. Kidney disease
  4. Pregnancy
  5. Lactation

Monitoring

Patients taking deferiprone should be monitored closely for signs and symptoms of neutropenia and liver damage. Absolute neutrophil count and liver function tests should be monitored regularly.

How to Use

Take orally with food and water, as directed by your physician.

How to Store

Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.

Safety Concerns

  • Alcohol: Avoid during treatment.
  • Breastfeeding: Not recommended.
