Uses of Riomet G-2 Tab

The combination of glimepiride and metformin is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and metformin or sulfonylurea alone do not provide adequate glycemic control.
This combination helps control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes by improving the body's response to insulin and decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver.

Side Effects of Riomet G-2 Tab

Diarrhoea, vomiting, metallic taste, rash, isolated transaminase elevations, cholestatic jaundice, allergic skin reactions, photosensitivity reactions, leukopaenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopaenia, haemolytic anaemia, aplastic anaemia, pancytopaenia, blurred vision. Potentially Fatal: Lactic acidosis.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant admin with propranolol increases Cmax, AUC, and T1/2 of glimepiride. Aspirin increases the mean AUC of glimepiride. Furosemide increases the Cmax of metformin. Potentially Fatal: NSAIDS, salicylates, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, coumarins, probenecid, MAOs, and beta blockers potentiate the hypoglycemic action of glimepiride.

Contraindications

The combination is contraindicated in patients with:

1. Severe renal impairment (glomerular filtration rate [GFR] <30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
2. Metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis
3. Hypersensitivity to glimepiride, metformin, or any component of the medication

Mechanism of Action

1. Glimepiride: It is a sulfonylurea that stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
2. Metformin: It is a biguanide that decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.

Special Precautions

Renal and hepatic impairment. Avoid alcohol consumption. Hypoglycaemic episodes.

How to Use

Take orally with food and water, as directed by your physician.

How to Store

Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.

Safety Concerns

• Alcohol: Avoid during treatment.
• Breastfeeding: Not recommended.
• Pregnancy: Contraindicated.
• Liver/Kidney: Use with caution.
