Alectinib is a medication used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that is positive for anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK). It belongs to a class of drugs known as ALK inhibitors.
Common side effects of alectinib may include fatigue, constipation, swelling (edema), muscle pain, and difficulty breathing (dyspnea).
Less common but more serious side effects can include liver problems, severe allergic reactions, and severe lung problems (pneumonitis).
Alectinib may interact with certain medications, such as strong CYP3A inhibitors and inducers, which can affect its levels in the body.
It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Alectinib is contraindicated in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to alectinib or any of its components.
It should also not be used in patients with severe liver impairment.
Alectinib works by inhibiting the activity of ALK, which is a gene that can fuse with other genes to form an abnormal ALK protein. This protein can drive the growth of cancer cells, especially in NSCLC. By inhibiting ALK, alectinib helps to stop the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Before starting alectinib, patients should undergo testing to determine their ALK mutation status.
Regular monitoring of liver function tests and cardiac function may be required during treatment with alectinib.
Alectinib may cause fetal harm if used during pregnancy, so effective contraception should be used during treatment and for some time after the last dose.
It's important for patients to discuss with their healthcare providers about the potential benefits and risks of alectinib treatment, as well as any specific concerns they may have.
Take orally with food and water, as directed by your physician.
Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.
